In the UK there's something like 7000 people waiting for a bone marrow transplant. I've been on the register for 10 years and recently been asked to provide further blood samples! They have identified me as a potential match for a patient who I will hopefully be able to help.

So many people are put off donating bone marrow purely because of the pain. However, the standard bone marrow "harvest" (I hate that word in this context!!) is done until general anaesthetic. There's an alternative procedure called Peripheral Blood Stem Cells which involves a process very similar to donating blood.

It would be great if more people in the world could sign themselves up for donating bone marrow as there's obviously a lot of people out there that need help. Plus you get two weeks off work!
Giving the gift of bone marrow is an incredibly important job. In the UK there’s something like 7000 people waiting for a bone marrow transplant.
