As a "would-eat-anything-off-the-floor-if-hungry-enough" glutton, I still can't wrap my head around why they would rather go hungry. Definitely puts a kink in my debates with filthy rich friends who would never donate their hard-earned inherited wealth.
Wow, kinda eye opening. Your report was dated in '04.
2. Second of all, maybe the amount of food needed to purchase at wholesale is less, and that more effficient food distribution makes it possible to purchase less. There maybe less wastage, and therefore, less food maybe bought. This may give us the illusion of lesser calorific consumption.

But for sure, them Indians need to start building toilets, BIG CLEAN TOILETS; need to invest in rose-scented Lysol; need to stop defacating/urinating on the streets, and start eating higher quality foods and construct more aesthetically pleasing building.
Two things, Ms. Bose: 1. The economist Utsa Patnaik has been engaged in a long running debate where she argues that India's recent 'progress' is a lot of bogus. Indians are actually getting poorer. The drop in food consumption is proof of this fact. It's certainly quite compelling. There is one economic idea that states that, for example, you double the food/standard-of-living/resources for the people, then the population would also increase such that their standard-of-living is restored to the pre-boom levels.
Even in the slums of Bombay, the poor there would rather purchase TVs and cable with it, rather than an indoor bathroom. In other words every man is ultimately captain of his ship and even this often ultimately creates the rising tide. And, for Mr. Mbarbk, the guy quoted earlier who found his TV more appealing than food, participation in a broader economy isn't a nonconsequential thing. Even TV can set in motion the wheels of long term progress."
I agree with this:
