Oh Damn! I wrote about my first night in my blog (even if I have tagged it as 'humor'). Would I receive a khusboo-esque treatment? Is it bad? Or is it good, because a year down, you get to become a politician with a ruling party?

There is no such thing as “Hindu culture”. It’s “Hindu cultures” – note the plural form. I personally include Indian atheists/agnostics who grew up in India, Indian Christians/Muslims living in India, and even 2nd gen ABDs brought up by orthodox 1st gen parents as falling under “Hindu cultures”.

That doesn’t make any sense. Did you mean to say “Indian culture”?

Columnist Kalpana Sharma at 'The Hindu' had an excellent analytical piece in the midst of all this Madras drama in 2005. I am not able to locate it (Hindu's site is so clunky and user-unfriendly) but here is a link to a related article from 2005, 'Women speak out'. It is interesting though that Tamil parties that are supposedly "rationalist" in origin make this demand for chastity based on a yearning for some hallowed past instead of religious strictures.

Yes, well, no nationalist movement is immune from Golden Age Syndrome (GAS), not even the rationalist nationalists.

Good points Vivek & Karpu. It is interesting though that Tamil parties that are supposedly “rationalist” in origin make this demand for chastity based on a yearning for some hallowed past instead of religious strictures. I am not too surprised though, I have met some older Tamils who are atheists/scientific reductionist in orientation who pretty much venerate Kannagi as the “good girl” par exemplar.

To add to the above, the majority of the public itself treats this issue and such issues in general, as spicy political theater to be watched and are not usually offended by it. The fact that Kushboo joined the DMK after the case was dismissed shows impeccable timing. She was supposed to have debated between joining the Congress and DMK. The Congress being a non-entity in Tamil Nadu her only real choices were DMK or AIADMK. Since the DMK seems politically stronger at present she picked it over AIADMK. Each of these political parties have a slew of TV channels she can work in anyway, with the DMK having the more popular channels. With her joining the DMK, she will have more political protection for any statements she makes in the future and she will have not have any case foisted on her and drag on for so long.
