Come now, Rob, are you trying to suggest that Portmanteau really is that “sinister”?

I may be ambivalent, but not ambidextrous. Due to a congenital deficit in dexterity* , I am guilty of being sinister as well as socio-politically gauche.

Yennappa Naataan, how can you dismiss the maddhippu of a theiveehamane paddhaippu?

For all your Tamil (I think) speaking, at least the DAR set like to hang out with you. On the other hand, gauche ol’ me is probably not welcome at their dinner parties.

Given the weakness of familial connections engendered by American living among desis, I wonder how the second generation of the Gujarathi motel owners are holding up. I am betting that the first generation Gujarathi motel owners have been more successful in imbuing their American born kids with a sense of community feeling among their extended families and clans, unlike the kids of the professional class whose upbringing has made them trumpet that they hardly knew any other desis growing up, let alone extended family.</p> The business class in India have typically been even more tightly knit through extended familial connections and I see this as a strong point among the Gujarathi motel owners who have translated this strength into their dominance in the motel sector in the US.
