How was this shot taken? Available light? Or did you have a single (not very diffused) flash camera right and high?
Preston,

I know this is way OT and potentially asking you to reveal trade secrets. How was this shot taken? Available light? Or did you have a single (not very diffused) flash camera right and high?

Everyone should read it - and I'm not just saying that because I have a deep and abiding love for V.V., which I do. I learned so much about Sri Lanka from the characters in this book, and I identified with many of them. I highly recommend it.
This novel is FANTASTIC. Sure, I probably carry the expectation of that voice in my head myself yet there is something more authentic than just that: the choice of words, the way they are strung together, the turn of phrases.

As familiar as I have become with the post-1983 expat SriLankan community and the expat SriLankan student community (where rules by which a marriage comes together have been relaxed somewhat compared with the historic attitudes), I had to pause to remember that the divide between 'love' and 'arranged' marriages was big in yester-SriLanka too as it was in India.

I have something positive to say about the photograph also. I like this 'natural' look and pose much better than some other writers' very obviously glamorous and glossy pictures. Almost as if it is not enough just to write well; they have to make sure they look exceptionally beautiful too. I don't know how much is personal choice and how much is pressure from the publicity department, but I want to add my vote to this simple and starightforward approach.
Strange (and beautiful): as I read the excerpt, I could hear the very specific SriLankan Tamil flavored English in the narrator’s voice.
