I'm guessing/hoping we'll have (i) reader ranking of news stories (ii) lifting of the 100-word limit to (say) 250) words (iii) - a combination of the first two - to effectively have reader-submitted 'posts', that are also ranked by other readers.

The ranking is computed in real time, but each IP can vote only once on any post. Also, no IP can submit more than two posts during any 24 hour period that begins at midnight EST. Every eight hours, the top 5 ranked posts move to the top of the News Tab. Any reader who consistently produces top ranked posts in the News Tab (e.g., gets in the top 5 for more than 15 days in consecutive months) will be invited to consider guest blogging for SM. To counter the inherent non-judgementality of SMers (aha!) which would manifest itself in a reluctance to rank posts - the number of clicks a post gets - normalized for IP, so only one click per IP would count - can be used to reality-check rankings.

I suggest that if this algorithm were coded, and implemented over the News Tab for the past six months, KXB would naturally emerge at the top, double-validating his guest-blogger status. Also, KXB, when are you getting yourself an avatar ? :)
Whatever it is, it’s probably related to the News and Events tabs – because Chaitan is shutting them down for ‘maintenance’ tonight.
