THis was game over from year 0. Back when the LTTE was forming as a militant group, it would have been a good idea to give into their demands for a separate state, or atleast a high level of autonomy. But now the LTTE is no longer even a terrorist group (that is, have a political agenda) but a gang. No matter what happens now, if Tamils are not granted independence or if they are, the LTTE will not dissappear and will continue to use the same terrorist/gangland tactics to stay in power.

Let's start distinguishing between the LTTE and Sri Lankan Tamil civilians... the more we equate the two the more we lend legitimacy to the LTTE as representatives of Sri Lankan Tamils.

Naturally it'll take much more than this, but it's the least we can do, in terms of rhetoric and language...

I’m extremely skeptical about the situation in Sri Lanka. Both sides are so dug in to their respective positions that it seems a much larger scale civil war is the only way this thing gets “resolved.”

The political road adopted by Sinhalese and Tamil groups after the independence(especially around 1960′s) has been the key ever since. Mani Shankar Aiyar, addresses it very eloquently in his book “Confessions of a Secular Fundamentalist”.His conclusion, essentially is, when a majority population/group tries to enforce its view/beliefs/practices on the minority…a.k.a, if you are not secular and don’t give concessions, peace can’t be excepted.

Not sure,if I am in full agreement with that theory, but it does have some meat in it. The book is quite interesting, although, most of it is Hindutva bashing…of course! (with a title like Secular Fundamentalist).
