also, re the NYC meetup, echoing what someone said on the other thread, i'll give summerstage a miss (can't stand summerstage) but am up for drinks afterward and/or the knitting factory event.

Well, Summerstage has its moments, but I understand the aversion--not sure if I dare to brave it for Lady Sovereign this Sunday. And there's nothing wrong with the Knitting Factory--as long as it's not a performance-art piece involving circumcision (it has been said around here that you are to be feared with a scalpel).

If you're planning to drink in the Knitting Factory vicinity before the show, I recommend Puffy's Tavern, at the corner of Hudson and Harrison. It's been cleaned up, so it's not as dazzlingly dive-y as it was a decade ago, but, then, what is? It's usually pretty quiet on Sunday afternoons and evenings, with a great bartender (Christy, formerly of the late, great Liquor Store bar), and a cantankerous crew of regulars. There's a dartboard. And I once heard Edward Albee eulogize a dog there.

what’s the opinion on a possible attendee who a) started reading sepiamutiny only a month ago and was previously oblivious b) reads to learn, but unfortunately enough doesn’t form opinions quickly enough to be able to contribute c) this is her first friggin’ post ever!

what i’m getting at, is that i’d love to attend a meetup, but would feel sheepish about my inability to contribute. you all seem very nice, but also seem to know everything and everyone else, and i am more than a little intimidated!

I would definitely attend a chicago meetup. In fact, I'd attend the one here in SF (I'm here for the summer), but I'll be in LA (or, rather, on my way back to SF from LA).
