The thing to note is that this is 4,500 years before the height of the ancient Indus Valley civilization. It is not so surprising though, if we also consider that in the neighboring Rohri Hills large-scale flint mining was underway for tens of thousands of years before dentistry in Mehrgarh. A complex pre-historic culture flourished in the subcontinent long before the first cities, which must have sprung from a complex social and cultural system.

For the past 3 years or so I have had trouble with the molar and the attendant root canal work…my daughter sent me the link to your post of the past…does it make me feel better? No, it makes me feel as if it was I who has been having root canal work since the ancient Paleolithic or whatever era!

until 100 years ago medicine & dentistry wasn't much more effective (and perhaps less so because of infection) shamanistic spells. i think these practices need to be looked at less from a functional than a ritualistic lens, that is, it isn't about what it does to the body, but how it makes one feel (as most of medicine was for recorded history as well).
