That's the lining of his jacket, lit up by the flash. Sheesh. You can see that it runs low on his right side and then goes high on his left b/c his arm is up.

I was more impressed by the ahem crease on the left leg of his trousers (the right most leg of the photo)

I had to confiscate many of my dad's ties from the 70s. My personal favorite: a wide-ass tie, with batiked pink elephants walking (trunk to tail) across it diagonally.
