AWAZ Voices Against Violence

Six years ago, in response to the high incidence of domestic violence in the local South Asian community, and the severe lack of culturally/ linguistically appropriate services for domestic violence victims, SAN established a multifaceted domestic violence intervention and prevention program. Known in the community as AWAZ Voices Against Violence, the program has benefited a total of 887 domestic violence survivors including 436 adults and 451 witnessing children. The comprehensive, community-based core services of the AWAZ program are: multilingual crisis hotline, crisis intervention, safety planning, case management, counseling for adult and child survivors, community education and outreach, peer support groups for adult survivors and creative arts workshops for the children of survivors. AWAZ staff also provide cultural sensitivity training for law enforcement and service providers, domestic violence training for staff and volunteers and leadership development training focused on nurturing the advocacy skills of domestic violence survivors.
