SHaKTI PRODUCTIONS, LLC

SHaKTI PRODUCTIONS creates educational resources for non-profit social change and community-based organizations that are working to end violence against women and children in traditionally silenced communities. These resources are used to heighten awareness of issues that contribute to this violence and sustain new levels of activism to change the way communities respond. Started in 1989, SHaKTI PRODUCTIONS has released 2 award-winning video documentaries, "Voices Heard Sisters Unseen" (1995) which is about the intersections of historical oppressions and domestic violence and "The Children We Sacrifice" (2000) which is about child sexual abuse in South Asian communities. This video has been screened in 18 countries. SHaKTI's work focuses on traditionally silenced communities.

Telling the Truth in a Culture of Silence
Reviewed by Kelli Zaytoun, Director of Women's Studies, Wright State University, 2007-01-17

Grace Poore, Director of Shakti Productions, is a gifted filmmaker and tireless, compassionate activist. Witnessing her beautifully crafted films, hearing her lectures, and participating in her skillfully led discussions are deeply moving experiences. Poore facilitates productive conversations about the complexities of violence against women and children, particularly childhood sexual abuse. Most importantly, she leaves her audiences with hope that cycles of violence can be exposed and broken - that silence can be replaced by action - and healing can take place. Poore came to our campus in 2001 and again in 2006. I was amazed at her ability to bring forth profound, intimate responses and discussions, even in audiences of a couple hundred people. The following are comments I received from participants following Grace Poore’s most recent visit:

“An experience like yesterday makes one realize the issues that many of our students hold near their hearts, and how a dynamic speaker like Grace can provide the safe and understanding environment to self-disclose and express some of their deepest thoughts and concerns. The experience was moving - THANKS!” WSU faculty member

“Grace Poore is AMAZING! It was a privilege to read her articles, view her films, and have her lead us in a discussion. She really made me think.” WSU student

“As I listened to Grace Poore, I realized that this subject has so much depth. She opened my eyes to the effects that sexual abuse has not only on the victim, but the entire family.” WSU student

Shakti Productions is a unique, invaluable resource for educators and activists alike. I will certainly ask Poore to return to our campus again. Her work is irreplaceable.
