Union Rights
I support union representation of public employees (and all employees) since unions keep open a channel of communication between management and employees. Hence I believe collective bargaining rights should be restored.
However, there has to be reasonableness on the part of all, in order for smooth functioning, and when situations and times merit all have to be ready to make reasonable sacrifices. The pendulum should not be allowed to swing to either extreme direction
As a representative example, a friend of mine works for a subsidiary of a large company. The company had a plant in Michigan which they shut down and moved out of the state since union demands were stifling -obviously we all understand that if there is no plant there is no need for unions and there is nothing to talk about! We cannot afford to have that (employers leaving) in Wisconsin.
On the other hand, lack of union representation has the potential for corporate (or managerial) autocracy, unacceptable working conditions and complete disregard of employee welfare, which is also unacceptable. Further, lack of a voice representing employees and an avenue for communication, particularly during difficult circumstances, can lead to lower morale and lower productivity, which does not benefit anyone —management, employees or society.
In summary, I believe there has to be a middle ground approach.
However, I do believe employees should have the choice whether to join a union or not - this country is about freedom to make choices and everyone should the right to decide whether they want to join a union or not; I do not support mandatory withdrawal of union dues. Rather, this principle provides an incentive for union leaders to have a product and services, if you will, that would make people want to join unions.
Some of the above may not apply to all circumstances, but the broad principles remain the same.
