Gun Control
The second amendment provides us with the right to bear firearms. The controversy revolves around ease of access to firearms and restrictions regarding possession. Proponents of gun control argue that easy access to firearms and the freedom to carry them as one chooses increases the risk of gun-based violent crimes. Well-meaning, they often cite examples such as the assassination attempt on President Reagan. However, there are two problems with such an argument. Firstly, it does not account for crimes that are prevented when law-abiding citizens bear arms to protect themselves. Perhaps, more importantly there is no evidence that blocking legal access to something that could be used for illegal purposes reduces criminal actions. In fact, the evidence suggests quite the opposite- if one legalizes products that have the possibility of malicious or illegal use, related crimes decrease. Someone who wants a gun will find a way to get hold of one, legally or otherwise. Thus until I see compelling data that shows that imposing gun control reduces crime (in fact I suspect quite the opposite) I fully support the right to bear arms as provided by the second amendment. The solution to gun-based crimes is not to take away the right but severely punish those who use this right to break the law.
